Delight as Brighton basketball court is set for renovation

A MUSICIAN says he “jumped up with excitement” after finding out his campaign to renovate a seafront basketball court had been successful.

Brighton and Hove City Council announced the popular site near the i360 will be given a new floor and backboards.

Gerrald Emeagwali, also known as MagicOfficialTMC, started a petition over the summer asking the authority to “pour some love back into the court” as the well-used surface has become uneven and the backboards were on the brink of collapse.

Over the weekend, notices were pinned to the pillars supporting the hoops at the court outlining plans to refurbish the site and the council has now confirmed the work will be carried out over the next few days.

The Argus:

Mortgage rates moved even lower last week after setting multiple record lows in recent months, spurring more borrowers to call their lenders and apply for a refinance, but homebuyers were quite as motivated.

The average contract interest rate for 30-year fixed-rate mortgages with conforming loan balances of up to $510,400 slipped to 3.01% from 3.05%, while points decreased to 0.37 from 0.52 for loans with a 20% down payment.

In response, refinance application volume, which is most sensitive to weekly rate moves, rose 8% for the week and was 50% higher than a year ago, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association’s seasonally adjusted index. That is the highest refinance volume since mid-August.

Applications for a mortgage to purchase a home fell 2% for the

Baltic sovereigns face growth and fiscal shock, but GDP contractions are set to be among smallest in eurozone – Emerging Europe

Weaker public finances and the shock to economic growth, together with their potential impact on medium-term growth and fiscal dynamics, are the main channels through which the coronavirus pandemic can affect the sovereign credit ratings of the Baltic States, Fitch Ratings says in a new report.

However, the report notes that Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are much better positioned to weather the current shock than they were during the global financial crisis; a period of multi-notch downgrades.

The economies of the three Baltic States are being hit hard by the pandemic. As small, open economies with relatively large transport sectors, they are vulnerable to the sharp fall in external demand, while domestic containment measures have hit household consumption, industrial production and what were until recently rapidly growing tourism sectors. However, the relatively quick easing of containment measures and fiscal stimulus packages have supported economic activity meaning the contractions in GDP

Rich Economies Set to Recover More Quickly From Covid-19 Contractions

By Paul Hannon

China and other rich countries will suffer less economic damage from the coronavirus pandemic than previously feared, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, but the global public health emergency will exact a higher toll on the economies of poor countries.

The Paris-based research body Wednesday said the global economy will contract less sharply this year than it thought likely in June, but warned that the recovery is set to slow from this month and remain vulnerable to fresh outbreaks. The OECD doesn’t expect a vaccine to be widely available until the end of next year.

“Momentum appears to be plateauing and confidence remains weak,” said Laurence Boone, the OECD’s chief economist.

In the latest of its quarterly reports on the global economy, the research body said it now expects the U.S. economy to shrink by 3.8% this year, having forecast a decline of 7.3%
