Criminal charges filed against superintendent, former medical director at Holyoke Soldiers’ Home after deadly Covid-19 outbreak

The superintendent and former medical director of the Holyoke Soldiers’ Home face criminal charges in connection with a Covid-19 outbreak at the veteran’s home earlier this year, Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey said Friday.

The nursing home for veterans in Massachusetts suffered a deadly Covid-19 outbreak in March and April. According to staff and union accounts shared with CNN, the home dealt with systemic issues like short staffing for years.

On Thursday, a grand jury indicted Superintendent Bennett Walsh, 50, and former medical director David Clinton, 71, “for causing or permitting serious bodily injury or neglect of an elder during the Covid-19 outbreak,” Healey said.

They are each facing 10 counts: five counts of criminal neglect and five counts of serious bodily injury.

“A home warranty helps protect a homeowner from major home system and appliance repair and replacement costs,” explains Tim Meenan, executive director and general counsel for the Service Contract Industry Council in Tallahassee, Florida. He says a typical warranty covers heating, air conditioning, electrical, plumbing systems, and major appliances such as washing machines, dryers, and refrigerators.

Home Improvement Stocks Vie With Tech for an Investor Reckoning

Global tech stocks aren’t the only ones due an investor checkup. Home improvement companies have also surged during the pandemic, and it’s fair to ask if this is as good as it gets.

An equal-weighted basket of 30 of the world’s biggest home improvement companies is up 23% this year, easily besting the 2% rise in the MSCI AC World Index, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The gauge has almost doubled from its March lows, outpacing even the 63% rise in the high-flying Nasdaq-100 Index.

The gains have left stocks in the basket — including U.S. giant Home Depot Inc., Kingfisher Plc from the U.K. and Germany’s Hornbach Holding AG — trading on an average of 25 times forward earnings, up from 19 times at the end of February.

Rich Economies Set to Recover More Quickly From Covid-19 Contractions

China and other rich countries will suffer less economic damage from the coronavirus pandemic than previously feared, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, but the global public health emergency will exact a higher toll on the economies of poor countries.

The Paris-based research body Wednesday said the global economy will contract less sharply this year than it thought likely in June, but warned that the recovery is set to slow from this month and remain vulnerable to fresh outbreaks. The OECD doesn’t expect a vaccine to be widely available until the end of next year.

“Momentum appears to be plateauing and confidence remains weak,” said Laurence Boone, the OECD’s chief economist.

In the latest of its quarterly reports on the global economy, the research body said it now expects the U.S. economy to shrink by 3.8% this year, having forecast a decline of 7.3%

During closure, Nature Center workers had a wild time adding a host of improvements

The peace and quiet that often prevails at WNC Nature Center recently seems … well, unnatural. But that’s the wild reality during the course of a pandemic.

“It’s surreal, actually,” director Chris Gentile said. “You know, we’ve had the place to ourselves now for about six months. And the animals are wondering where everybody is.”

But, while the center was closed, two employees saw an opening.

“What a difference a day makes,” said Eddie Martinez, a maintenance technician.
