Gillmor Gang: Home Stretch

On this edition of the Gillmor Gang, the live recording session was briefly interrupted by a rolling upgrade from Zoom. We’ve been using Zoom to virtualize what we’ve been doing for years with a combination of video switching hardware (Newtek’s TriCaster), a bunch of Mac Minis hosting Skype, an audio mixing board, and a backchannel pushing the switched Program Out to the members of the group. At first, we partnered with Leo Laporte on his fledgling video network. Subsequently, I copied Leo’s early studio setup to make the transition to streaming.

At that point, streaming was an emergent model. No Netflix, no Facebook Live, certainly no transition from RSS and podcasting to what we see now as Streaming From Home is adopted. Not just by the technocrati but mainstream cable networks, the remnants of broadcast television, and commercial streaming networks like Hulu, Amazon Prime, Disney +, and even Apple TV

Saints explore playing games at LSU; league says a Week 18 is possible

NFL owners met remotely, and afterward league leaders said that while no options have been ruled out, they’re not focused on measures such as pausing the season or using a bubble approach for the playoffs. Commissioner Roger Goodell said the review by the league and the NFL Players Association of the Tennessee Titans’ outbreak is “not about discipline” but safety.

The Saints said in a statement from a spokesman that their game operations staff met Tuesday with LSU officials to discuss the prospect of the team playing games at Tiger Stadium. The team said the school has been “gracious and enthusiastic” about that possibility. The scenario also has been discussed with the NFL, the Saints said.

“Obviously, our overwhelming preference is to play our games in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome with partial fan attendance, but there has been no indication from the city on when, or if, this might be approved,”

Alleged Kenosha shooter Kyle Rittenhouse won’t face charges in home state of Illinois

Kyle Rittenhouse, the teenager accused of shooting two protesters in Kenosha, Wis., this summer, will not face any charges in his home state of Illinois, The Associated Press reported Tuesday.

Prosecutors in Illinois said an investigation found that the AR-15-style rifle used in the Kenosha shooting was purchased, stored and used in Wisconsin, according to the AP. There was no evidence that the gun was ever in Rittenhouse’s physical possession in Illinois, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office said.

Rittenhouse is being held in a juvenile detention center in Lake County, Ill., without bond. He is due back in court on Oct. 30 for an extradition hearing, where he is challenging his extradition from Illinois to Wisconsin.

Rittenhouse, 17, is charged with first-degree intentional homicide in the killing of two protesters during demonstrations in Kenosha over the police shooting of Jacob Blake, a Black man who was shot during

Solano County legalized home food popups. But chefs still can’t sell

When Solano County approved a new California law that would legalize home-based kitchen operations in April, it seemed like Cheska Kistner’s plans to open a restaurant in her Benicia home would finally come to fruition. The measure, California’s AB626, allows for what are known as microenterprise food businesses, which Alameda County also made inroads toward legalizing yesterday. But no Bay Area county has yet fully implemented the 2018 law, leaving entrepreneurs like Kistner in limbo.

New Orleans Saints explore playing home games outdoors at LSU’s Tiger Stadium

The New Orleans Saints have begun discussions with LSU about holding future home games at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, a team spokesman said.

“LSU has been gracious and enthusiastic regarding hosting our future games and we very much appreciate their partnership,” said Greg Bensel, the Saints’ senior vice president for communications. “We have also discussed the possibility of moving our home games to LSU with the NFL and they are aware of our exploring this option.

“Obviously, our overwhelming preference is to play our games in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome with partial fan attendance, but there has been no indication from the city on when, or if, this might be approved.”

The Saints have played three of eight scheduled regular-season home games in the Superdome this season with no ticketed fans in attendance. The few hundred in attendance consisted primarily of privately invited family members of players, coaches or

Florida Coach Wanted 90,000 Fans at Home This Week, But Now His Players Have COVID

Florida Gators football coach Dan Mullen said he wanted 90,000 screaming fans at his home stadium this weekend when they host the LSU Tigers. Now, they hope to just play a game after suspending team activities because some of their players have caught coronavirus.

The school announced Tuesday that it has suspended athletic activities after five football players tested positive for COVID-19. Florida athletics director Scott Stricklin issued a statement that said the suspension of activities was out of caution.

“Out of an abundance of caution, team activities are paused as of Tuesday afternoon. Head coach Dan Mullen has been in communication with football players and their parents, and I have had conversations with the Southeastern Conference office, last week’s opponent Texas A&M, and this week’s opponent LSU,” Stricklin said.

Strucklin added that the UF sports medicine department will reassess the situation on Wednesday.

Eagles to allow limited number of fans at Lincoln Financial Field for remaining home games

The Philadelphia Eagles are reopening the doors to Lincoln Financial Field. The team announced on Tuesday that they will welcome up to 7,500 people into home games for the remainder of the season. The capacity limit includes all players, coaches, team employees, stadium personnel and media, as well as fans in attendance.

The first game with fans will be against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.

Here’s what the Eagles wrote about the decision, via the team website:

“Under the guidelines set forth by the National Football League and public health experts, and with the approval of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the City of Philadelphia, the Eagles have finalized plans that will lead to a limited capacity of fans returning to Lincoln Financial Field, starting this Sunday.”

President Don Smolenski said they have worked closely with state and local officials, public health experts and the NFL in order to make

In an effort to play in front of fans, the New Orleans Saints are discussing the possibility of playing games outside of the Mercedes-Benz Superdome this season. As for where the Saints may go, the team said on Tuesday that they’ve been in communication with LSU and have been interested in possibly playing at Tiger Stadium. The reason for this potential change in home venue for some games this year, the teams says, is due to the COVID-19 pandemic and local government restrictions.

“We can confirm that our game operations staff is meeting with LSU officials today to discuss potentially hosting future Saints home games at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge,” said Saints VP of communications Greg Bensel in a statement, via Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network. “LSU has been gracious and enthusiastic regarding hosting our future games and we very much appreciate
