‘Just untenable’: Calls mount for improvements at South Lake Elementary

Parents, teachers and local religious leaders turned out at an elementary school in Montgomery County, Maryland, to call for construction of a new school, which they say is desperately needed.

Parents, teachers and local religious leaders turned out at an elementary school in Montgomery County, Maryland, to call for construction of a new school, which they say is desperately needed.

Members of Action in Montgomery, a community advocacy group, stood outside the building that was riddled with problems, from overcrowding to infrastructure and even rodents, as WTOP reported over the summer.

South Lake has almost 900 students, which is well over the original building capacity, and is home to the most Black and Latino students of any county elementary school. It also has the highest number of children who are participating in free meal programs.

  • Twitter has since decided to sublease 100,000 square feet at its San Francisco headquarters and has a policy in place to cut pay for employees who move outside the Bay Area to a less expensive region.

As downtown renovation continues, Mesquite calls for local artists to submit their work

Downtown Mesquite will look much different in January 2021 than it did in January 2020, and the city is looking for local artists who can help that transformation be even more visually stunning.

With the city nearing completion on its Front Street Station redevelopment, it is putting out a call to local artists interested in producing a work of public art.

Works by artists in Mesquite and the surrounding areas will be considered, according to a city news release, with the art intended to be displayed for at least one year on “four large surrounds built to camouflage dumpsters placed throughout the new Downtown area. Each of these surrounds will have 10′x7′ panels, where the art will be mounted,” according to the news release.

For each work, the city will pay the artist a $500 honorarium. Eight works of art will be selected.

Audit calls for improvements to Ignacio’s financial reporting

The town of Ignacio’s 2019 audit revealed both budgetary strengths and financial mishaps – errors town staff members vowed won’t happen again.

The town ended 2019 with a strong financial position, with growth in its overall budget and debt-free for the first time in 25 years, town staff members said. A period of employee turnover, however, raised questions about its financial checks-and-balances systems, called internal controls. Staff members had to fix multiple errors, including $83,000 of utility bills left temporarily unrecorded, according to a 2019 audit report by Hinton Burdick.

“We have the staff in place, and we have the systems in place. I would be surprised if those things showed up again,” said Tuggy Dunton, town clerk.
