2021 Design & Construction Week Moves to Virtual Event

After evaluating multiple safety and travel concerns related to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) recently announced its intention to move the 8th annual Design & Construction Week, which features the International Builders’ Show (IBS) and Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS) to a robust, all-virtual event platform.

While Design & Construction Week was originally scheduled to take place on Feb. 9-11, 2021 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla., the new all-virtual DCW 2021 will still take place the week of Feb. 8 with extended programming.

“Out of an abundance of caution and concern for the safety of our exhibitors, attendees and the thousands of onsite workers who support the premier event of the residential construction industry, we feel the only prudent course is to make this year’s show a virtual event,” says NAHB chairman

A Good Time To Buy iShares U.S. Home Construction ETF (BATS:ITB)

The iShares U.S. Home Construction ETF (ITB) is on fire, up over 30% year to date. This is much more than a short-term move driven by speculation – the rally in ITB is built on solid fundamentals, and the ETF looks well-positioned for sustained gains going forward.

The Fundamentals Look Strong

Before we try to understand the current situation in the housing market, it is important to understand where we are coming from. After the housing bubble exploded in 2008, housing starts have been well below average during the past decade.

Markets generally work like a rubber band, and excess in one direction can lead to subsequent excesses in the opposite direction. It is not just that new supply has been below average for a long time, but demand is also set to explode higher due to the millennial generation entering their prime home-ownership age.

The gain was double the 0.7% increase in July, the Commerce Department reported Thursday, and the August gain was better than economists had been expecting. In an additional sign of strength, the government revised higher its earlier estimates for spending in July and June.

Spending on residential construction rose 3.7% ,with a 5.5% rise in spending on single-family homes offsetting a 0.1% dip in apartment construction, a smaller an more volatile sector.

Construction update for June 2020

Rifle Citizen Telegram flag graphic

The city of Rifle is slated to start several projects which will begin this month and carry through the summer.

Waterproofing project: The Ute Theater Foundation will dig up the existing foundation of the Ute Theater and waterproof the concrete to stop leaks. High ground water levels in the past have caused drywall and carpet damage in the Ute Theater. The project funded by a Garfield County Federal Mineral Lease Grant will stop continuous repair of the changing rooms within the theater, and will be completed by mid-June.

Road rebuilding and pedestrian improvements: A rebuilding project will improve the failing Fravert Boulevard and West Fifth to Fairway Avenue. A continuous sidewalk will be added up the hill to Fairway Avenue to provide a safe pedestrian corridor.  The project will begin mid-June and continue throughout the summer; 60% of this project’s funding came from the Garfield County Mineral Lease Grant.

Finish in sight for new Badgers pool construction, Field House exterior renovation | College sports

When overseas entry to the U.S. is possible, the pool will be drained and the moveable floor installed.

The Badgers swimming and diving teams have competed at the Natatorium but had their training facilities at the now-demolished SERF. The Soderholm Family Aquatic Center also has a diving well, a video board and seating for around 1,000, King said.

UW Athletics paid $13.5 million toward the $96 million Nicholas Recreation Center for UW students and staff, which features 30,400 square feet of fitness space, eight full-size basketball courts and five multipurpose studios. It was slated to open last January but experienced weather and construction delays.

New home sales surge to highest level since before the Great Recession, as buyers are pushed into the construction market

The numbers: Sales of new single-family homes in August exceeded an annual rate of 1 million for the first time since 2006, as buyers were forced into the market for newly-constructed properties thanks to the dearth of home listings.

New home sales occurred at a seasonally-adjusted, annual rate of 1.011 million, the Census Bureau reported Thursday. That represents a 4.8% increase from an upwardly-revised pace of 965,000 homes in July. Compared with last year, new home sales are up 43%.

Economists polled by MarketWatch had expected home sales to drop to median pace of 900,000.

What happened: Not all parts of the country saw an uptick in sales despite the historically high rate nationally. New home sales fell 21.4% in the Midwest and 1.7%. Comparatively, the South saw the biggest increase in sales with a 13.4%, which sales volumes rose by 5% in the Northeast.
