Keep Your Home Temperature in Check With the New $130 Nest Thermostat

Google’s Nest brand just launched a new low-cost thermostat that looks to be as smart as it is attractive. The Nest Thermostat is available for pre-order now in gray, light pink, mint, or white for $129.99, though there’s no word yet on its actual release date.

Not to be confused with the $170 Nest Thermostat E or the $250 Nest Learning Thermostat, the $130 Nest Thermostat features a circular mirrored touch display that shows the target and current temperature, and whether it’s in active heating or cooling mode. Controls on the side let you change the temperature with a swipe up or down. You can also control it with your voice via Google Assistant through your smartphone or with smart speakers like the Nest Mini.

Nest says that most people will be able to install the new thermostat in 30 minutes or less with the help of its companion app,

Google Nest Audio review: A steal at $100

In a lot of ways, smart speakers are the ideal home stereo for the streaming music generation. Telling an Amazon Echo to play whatever song was on your mind for the first time was a bit of a revelation. And music remains one of the most-used and most crucial features of any smart speaker. The only problem is lots of them sound terrible.

Sonos, Google, Apple and Amazon all have smart speakers where music quality is paramount, but a $200 Echo Studio or Sonos one is a tough sell next to a $50 Echo Dot or Nest Mini. Google is trying to fill the gap between those two extremes with the $100 Nest Audio, a speaker that effectively replaces the original Google Home that arrived four years ago. That speaker was meant to be a jack of all trades Google Assistant device, but the Nest Audio has a focus on

Hands-On with Google Nest Audio

Announced last week during a virtual event alongside new Pixel handsets and the Chromecast with Google TV, Google Nest Audio is the new version of what used to be called Google Home, and it offers a more attractive form factor, better sound, and—go figure—lower pricing than its predecessor. I ordered a pair immediately, intrigued by Google’s ongoing efforts to take on and undercut Sonos.

The quick takeaway: Google Nest Audio is a nice advance over Google Home. But it’s no match for any Sonos speaker, including the identically-priced IKEA Symfonisk Wi-Fi Bookshelf Speaker. And Google still doesn’t offer a viable home theater setup with surround sound, while competitors like Amazon, Roku, and Sonos all do. I’m curious that it didn’t introduce such a system alongside the Chromecast with Google TV.

Anyway, Google Home was still ripe for a makeover, given that it is approaching its four-year anniversary next month. As

Nest Audio review: Google’s new smart speaker is an improvement in every way

nest-audio-3

Google’s new Nest Audio costs $100 and replaces the company’s original Google Home smart speaker.

Chris Monroe/CNET

Google’s very first smart speaker, the Google Home, appeared in 2016 as the answer to Amazon’s brand-new Echo device. Since then, the two companies have released countless smart devices, acquired startups and expanded their voice assistants to create the platforms millions of people use today.

The Google Home was overdue for an upgrade, and it comes in the form of the new Nest Audio. This $100 (£90, AU$149) smart speaker sits squarely in the middle of the Nest Mini and Home Max, providing a midrange speaker that is no more or less smarter than you’d expect. Sound is improved over the old Home speaker, and the design is updated, yet familiar, in keeping with the newer, fabric-wrapped design of Google’s other Nest speakers. A handful of new features make this sensibly

Google’s new smart speaker for your home takes on a completely new design — and a new name. From the specs to the look, Nest Audio is very much the next-generation full-size smart speaker for everyday use.

There’s plenty we know about the fabric-coated device, and much we’ll still have to find out. For example, we know it promises to improve speaker volume by an astonishing percentage, but we’ll have to see how the Nest Audio stacks up tothe recently updated Amazon Echo in real-world tests. If the Nest Audio’s specs are any indication, this could be the Alexa-killer Google has been hoping for.

We’ll walk you through the most important things to learn about the Nest Audio’s price, colors, sale date and features. And we’ll explain what the new name means for other Google Home ($99

Google Home welcomed a new member to the smart speaker family this week, except it isn’t called “Google” or “Home” at all. Still, the Nest Audio is very much the next-generation full-size smart speaker for everyday use.

There’s plenty we know about the fabric-coated device, and much we’ll still have to find out — such as whether the Nest Audio actually lives up to the hype and how it compares to the recently updated Amazon Echo. We’ll walk you through the most important things to learn about the Nest Audio’s price, colors, sale date and features. And we’ll explain what the new name means for other Google Home ($99 at Walmart) and Nest devices.

The Nest Audio costs $100.

Google

The Nest Audio smart speaker, widely leaked and even spotted last week in stores, was announced Wednesday at the company’s Launch Night In event. It’s the successor to the Google Home smart speaker, the very first speaker the search giant launched in 2016.

Here’s a quick rundown of what we learned today:

  • Priced at $100 (£90, AU$149)
  • Five colors: Chalk, charcoal, sand, sky and sage
  • Designed with 70% sustainable materials
  • 19mm tweeter for high frequency coverage and clear vocals
  • 75mm midwoofer for better bass

Google says the Nest Audio is 75% louder with a 50% stronger bass than the original Google Home.

Chromecast with Google TV, Nest Audio and Pixel 5 with Hold for Me: Today’s Google announcements

Chromecast with Google TV

Juan Garzon/CNET

Last week Amazon dropped its annual armada of new products on us — now it’s Google’s turn. The company’s Launch Night In stream Wednesday follows its unveiling of the Pixel 4A budget phone in August. That event confirmed the existence of its next flagship phone, the Pixel 5, and the Pixel 4A 5G. They were launched today, along with a new Chromecast and a new Nest-branded smart speaker, the Nest Audio. There were few surprises, however, other than the Hold for Me phone feature, which puts those awful you’re-on-hold-forever calls in Google Assistant’s hands.

The Pixel 5 announcement, as with Google’s previous flagship phones, has been leakier than ancient plumbing (or perhaps, as CNET’s Lynn La suspects, the “leaks” are part of Google’s marketing strategy).
