Hong Kong’s commercial landlords are offering incentives such as renovation subsidies to lure tenants, as the amount of office space lying empty reaches the highest level in 21 years, according to property services company CBRE.

Some landlords have begun offering a one-off subsidy to help new tenants fit out their office space, said Alan Lok, executive director of advisory and transaction services for offices at CBRE.

“In some cases, the landlord would offer a subsidy of about HK$100 (US$12.9) per square foot,” said Lok during a briefing on Wednesday.

The subsidy is attractive because relocation costs in Hong Kong are very expensive, he said.

After improvements, part of West Eleven office park heads to auction

About a year after the former Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan buildings in Southfield came under new ownership following a contentious court battle, part of what is now known as the West Eleven Office Park is heading to auction.

The auction for 27350 W. 11 Mile Rd. runs from 1 p.m. Nov. 16 to 1 p.m. Nov. 18 with a starting bid of $1.35 million for the 159,200-square-foot vacant building.

At one point, the building was “shuttered by debtors” and “unfit for occupancy,” court filings in Oakland County by Southfield-based brokerage house Farbman Group said last year.

The building is one of four that I wrote about in November stemming from a series of mind-boggling lawsuits between Canadian investors targeting each other in Oakland County and federal court, with allegations ranging from fraud to implications of one party in a double murder in Toronto.

Priti Patel has been criticised for refusing to deny that that Home Office made plans to install a wave machine in the English Channel to deter migrants.

The home secretary said in an interview with The Sunday Times that it would be “remiss of us not to look at all the options” in reference to reports the government was planning to build new detention centres to house migrants.

When asked about reports earlier this week that she had asked Home Office officials to look into the possibility of a wave machine Patel told the newspaper: “That’s operational tactics and, quite frankly, I’m not going to start discussing operational tactics.”

Several figures criticised the home secretary over the interview on Sunday morning, with former transport secretary Andrew Adonis questioning the legality of the alleged plans.

Home Office contractors have been accused of being “beyond reckless” in their handling of the initial outbreak.

Among those who were moved despite the instruction to self-isolate, at least nine people were found to have Covid following testing, although the Home Office had initially said none had tested positive.

The initial outbreak was among asylum seekers in Home Office accommodation in Birmingham. Public health officials deemed it too overcrowded to be Covid-secure after at least 26 people tested positive. Enforcement action was taken ordering everyone
