Line painting planned for next year as part of Oakmont’s pedestrian safety improvements

An Oakmont pedestrian safety project, inspired by a traffic study and a borough Girl Scout, is planned for next year.

Borough officials earmarked $40,000 in the 2021 budget for line painting for crosswalks along Allegheny River Boulevard and Allegheny Avenue.

It is unclear how much painting could be done with that amount of money.

The decision to improve the crosswalks was done after reviewing a traffic study by Wooster and Associates of Pittsburgh and a report from resident Audrey Myers, a ninth-grader at Riverview High School.

“I think she inspired us to move forward on it, and she has given us a wonderful tool to work with,” Councilwoman Nancy Ride said. “We’re able to use it rather than doing our research with our own staff, and we

Part of FIFA-funded stadium collapses during renovation in South Sudan- The New Indian Express

By Associated Press

SOUTH SUDAN: Part of a FIFA-funded stadium in South Sudan has collapsed during renovation work.

The world body said on Friday it was in contact with the South Sudan Football Association and seeking further information on a “minor incident” this week at Juba National Stadium in the country’s capital.

“Currently, we understand that there are no casualties or injuries that occurred as a result of the incident,” FIFA said, adding it involved the “setting of concrete.”

The Juba National Stadium is South Sudan’s only international-standard stadium and is being renovated using money from the FIFA Forward Program. FIFA gave $5 million for the renovation.

Work has been halted, although it might restart in weeks, youth and sports minister Dr. Albino Bol said. The renovation began last year and it is already behind schedule.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino pledged to fund the renovation during a visit to the

Inmates cook up a storm in Changi catering kitchen as part of training, rehab programme, Courts & Crime News & Top Stories

SINGAPORE – When father-of-two Faruk was sentenced to seven years and 10 months’ jail in 2017 for drug-related offences, he did not expect to find a passion for decorating cakes or learning how to fold pastries while behind bars.

The 38-year-old, who declined to give his full name, spends six days a week in a kitchen as part of his work programme during his incarceration in the Changi Prison Complex.

While his family has yet to try his creations, the former mechanic hopes to make his sons, aged 12 and 13, their favourite strawberry cheesecake, when he is released.

“My family was surprised that I could bake cakes. I could see from their faces that they are happy I’m learning because I have never done this kind of thing before,” said Faruk in a phone interview on Wednesday (Oct 7). “(In the kitchen,) I learnt how to be patient, relax,

After improvements, part of West Eleven office park heads to auction

About a year after the former Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan buildings in Southfield came under new ownership following a contentious court battle, part of what is now known as the West Eleven Office Park is heading to auction.

The auction for 27350 W. 11 Mile Rd. runs from 1 p.m. Nov. 16 to 1 p.m. Nov. 18 with a starting bid of $1.35 million for the 159,200-square-foot vacant building.

At one point, the building was “shuttered by debtors” and “unfit for occupancy,” court filings in Oakland County by Southfield-based brokerage house Farbman Group said last year.

The building is one of four that I wrote about in November stemming from a series of mind-boggling lawsuits between Canadian investors targeting each other in Oakland County and federal court, with allegations ranging from fraud to implications of one party in a double murder in Toronto.

Stage is part of $2M in improvements at Albany’s Lincoln Park

ALBANY — The city plans to spend $2 million to make improvements in Lincoln Park, including construction of an open-air theater and a pavilion, and the installation of seating and fitness equipment.

The work will be financed in part by nearly $450,000 in state funds secured by Assembly members John McDonald and Patricia Fahy. The rest of the work will be financed from the city’s capital fund through long-term borrowing that will be paid back over time.

At an announcement Tuesday morning, Mayor Kathy Sheehan said the city plans to revitalize playgrounds at Ridgefield, Westland Hills, Mater Christi and Washington Park too.

“These improvements were derived directly from the master plan, meaning that they come from our residents,” Sheehan said.

Sheehan’s proposed operating budget will be released on Thursday, and it comes in a year when the coronavirus pandemic has caused shortfalls in federal aid and a decline in tax
